William "Bill" C. Tharp, 83, of Las Cruces, NM passed away peacefully in the early morning hour of May 13, 2021 at 12:20AM from his battle with Dementia/Alzheimer.
William was born in El Paso, Tx on December 28, 1937 to Claud and Avalene Tharp. He graduated from Las Cruces High School then continued his education received a degree in Accounting from The University of New Mexico. He was a" life loyal member" of Sigma Chi Beta Xi Chapter at UNM and served as the Quaestor. William was also in the Army Reserves and was Honorably Discharged after six years.
He was a cotton merchant and President of Rountree Cotton Company, a family-owned business, for many years. He was involved in many organizations in the cotton industries such as New Mexico Cotton Ginner's Association, the National Cotton Council Association and President of the American Cotton Shippers Association. He also served on the board of director at First National Bank, Zion Bank and Wells Fargo Bank. He was a Trustee and Deacon at First Baptist Church in Las Cruces, NM where he also served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a caring, loving man who loved working with numbers, never met a stranger and was always willing to help someone in need. William was a Godly man who served by going on many missionary trips to Thailand, Taiwan and Mexico and donated time and money to help improve the community. He was loved by his family and friends and will be deeply missed.
William is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Sible; two sons, John Tharp of Las Cruces, and William Glenn Tharp (Arcy) of Miami, FL; One daughter, Edie Tharp (Jigger) of Sacramento, NM. He is also survived by his brother Charles Tharp (Linda) of Las Cruces, NM, his sister Claudia Keith of Albuquerque, NM, Five grandchildren, Four great- grandchildren, and several nieces and nephew. William was preceded in death by his parents Claud and Avalene Tharp, his first wife Glenda Tharp and his brother-in-law Joe Keith.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at First Baptist Church, 4201 North Sonoma Ranch Boulevard, Las Cruces, NM.
