Virginia Estell Holstein

Virginia Estell Holstein, 99, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2009. Virginia (Ginny) was born July 2, 1909 to Oteal and Robert Thornton in Orchard, West Virginia. At the age of 16 she left home to finish her high school education and then completed nursing school at Kanawha Valley Hospital, Charleston, W. V. She earned her high school diploma as well as her Registered Nurse degree in 1931. She married Ben F. Holstein in January 1932. Virginia worked as a nurse in Charleston, W. V. and Phoenix, AZ. When she and her family moved to Las Cruces in 1955 she worked as a private duty nurse at the old Memorial General Hospital. She lived her whole life to serve others, whether her family, friends or people in need of nursing care; she was everyone's MOM! She is survived by her son Ben A. Holstein (Trula) and her daughter Jeanne Martin, both of Las Cruces; one sister, Inez Richardson of Roanoke, VA. She has eight grandchildren; Lin Martin Samuelson (Kent), Bret Martin, Lew Martin (Bess), Lori Holstein Lorentz, Ross Holstein (Jill), Jenny Holstein Kleczka (Michael), Earl Holstein, and Rochelle Holstein Ellington (Derek) and six great grandchildren; Andy Lorentz, McKenna Martin, Nathan Kleczka, Evan Kleczka, Avery Holstein and Zoe Holstein. . She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben F. Holstein in July 1976, her sons, Jack T. Holstein and E. Ross Holstein, her parents and two brothers and two sisters. The family would like to thank the staff at Good Samaritan Nursing Center for the outstanding care she received for many years. A special thanks to the family friends, especially Ted A. Morris, Sr. and family, for their faithful visits and the friendship they shared. Lillian Erwin, her roommate was also a special friend for the last several years.
