Thomas E Cyrs

Thomas E. Cyrs,age 82, entered into eternal life from his home Friday, October 19, 2018. The son of Thomas and Catherine (Dunn) Cyrs, Tom was born in Manchester, NH on May 5, 1936. A short time later the family relocated to Peabody, MA where Tom was raised and educated. After high school, Tom enlisted in the Navy and spent the next three years as a Corpsman. His service completed, Tom attended Merrimack College. There he met and married a classmate, Carol (McDuffie) Cyrs. Continuing his education, he received his Ed.D from Boston University and began a long career in university education. He served at Northeastern and Boston Universities and the University of Minnesota before accepting a position as the founding director of the Center for Educational Development at NMSU. Tom was internationally recognized for his expertise in distance education and received awards in fields as varied as pharmacy, nursing, engineering and ultimately the international Wedemeyer Award for distance education. After retiring from New Mexico State University, art was Tom's avocation and he became known as an accomplished bird sculptor. Tom is survived by Carol, his wife of 57 years, his son Thomas (Jennifer), daughter, Katie Ann, and three grandchildren, Cameron Macaw, Kayla and Killian Cyrs. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Judith Macaw. A visitation will be held at Holy Cross Retreat on Friday, October 26, 2018 at 6:30 pm, followed by the Rosary at 7:30 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Newman Center on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 11:30 am.
