Shirley J. Soules

August 6, 1935 — January 11, 2019

Shirley J. Soules Born August 6, 1935 Died January 11, 2019 Shirley Soules, known as Shirl to her friends and family, was born Shirley Jeanette Anderson, in Denver, Colorado. Before Leaving Denver, Shirl worked in the historic Gano Downs Department Store and loved to ski down Berthoud Pass. Shirl and a friend left Denver on a lark, headed for parts unknown. They ran out of money around the time they hit Las Cruces. Shirl and her friend tended bar for a short while, after which Shirl landed a job as a secretary at the NMSU Physics Department. She quickly rose to head secretary based on her exacting standards. Shirl moved to Cleveland Ohio in 1968 and married Jack Soules via municipal court judge. Shirl loved to tell the story of how they honeymooned at the race track, where an enterprising entrepreneur of ladies-of-the-night, taken by their newlywed status, attended to their every need. In Cleveland, Shirl was employed as a legal secretary by John Martindale at the Martindale, Bristquva, & Quick Law Firm, where she worked for many years. Shirl embraced city living in Cleveland. She bowled in a local women's league, frequented the West Side Market and the Flats, and became an avid Indians, Browns, and Cavs fan. Shirl and Jack moved back to Las Cruces in 2006 and became active members of the Unitarian Universalist Church, participating in the weekly Roundtable discussions and supporting the fine community initiatives which have been a hallmark of the Church since its founding. She loved her cats, her dog Blue, and gardening. She never passed up an opportunity to check on the well-being of family, friends, and even casual acquaintances. She will be deeply missed. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, January 19, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 2000 S. Solano Dr. with a reception to follow. Service Information
