As friends and family reflect on their memories of him, they will carry forward the lessons he imparted and the love he shared. His spirit will serve as a constant reminder to embrace compassion, act with integrity, and treat others with kindness. In this way, Sam’s legacy will endure, inspiring future generations to follow in his footsteps and make the world a better place.

A LIFE ROOTED IN STRENGTH AND PURPOSE

Born in Huntsville, Alabama, Sam was the second of twelve children, growing up in a world that often sought to limit his potential. Yet, from an early age, he refused to be defined by circumstances. With determination and faith, he forged a path of resilience and excellence, values that would guide him throughout his life.

Affectionately known as “Red,” a nickname given at birth because of his reddish skin tone, Sam embraced the name as a reminder of the deep love of family and the community that shaped him. That same warmth and connection remained at the core of who he was—a man whose presence made others feel seen, valued, and empowered.

Following his honorable service in the U.S. Army, where he rose to the rank of Sergeant while stationed in South Korea, Sam pursued his academic aspirations, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Tennessee State University. This achievement was a testament to his unwavering belief that knowledge is power—a principle he instilled in his children, nurtured in his mentees, and shared with the countless young leaders who had the privilege of learning from him. A CAREER OF EXCELLENCE AND SERVICE

Sam’s professional journey led him to a distinguished career as an Electrical Engineer at White Sands Missile Range, where his brilliance and dedication played a crucial role in military testing and electronic warfare research. His contributions were recognized with the Commanding General’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Promoting Minority Programs, a reflection of his tireless efforts to open doors for others in a field where opportunities were not always equally given.

Yet, his work extended far beyond engineering, as his heart belonged to the people and his true life's mission revolved around civil rights, fair housing, and voting rights. His leadership in the NAACP spanned more than two decades, during which time he played a pivotal role in securing the passage of a countywide Fair Housing Act for Dona Ana County. He served for 14 years as the First Vice President of the New Mexico State Conference NAACP and dedicated 12 years as State President. In this capacity, he expanded NAACP branches, established youth and college councils, and fought for justice in communities throughout New Mexico.

For his unwavering commitment, he was honored with the Legacy Freedom Fighter Award, a recognition of his relentless pursuit of justice and equity.

MORE THAN A LEADER—A MAN OF HEART AND FAITH

Sam’s impact stretched beyond the halls of government and civil rights meetings. His warmth, humor, and wisdom made him a friend to all who knew him. He could debate politics one moment and share a hearty laugh over a game of Spades or Bid Whist the next. He had a deep love for sports—cheering passionately for the Seattle Seahawks, Golden State Warriors, and Los Angeles Dodgers (and playfully “booing” the Dallas Cowboys, just to keep things fun).

Sam was always ready for an adventure, embracing every opportunity to explore the world with his two daughters. His passion for travel took him to breathtaking corners of the earth, where he created lasting memories with his family. Together, they visited remarkable destinations such as China, where they marveled at the Great Wall; Russia, where they wandered through the vibrant atmosphere of Moscow's Red Square and admired the stunning architecture of the underground metro stations; and Germany, where they explored the enchanting castles of Bavaria. Their journeys continued as they strolled along the historic avenues of France and Spain, savored the art and culture of Italy, and immersed themselves in the unique traditions of Japan.

Their family escapades also led them to the stunning beaches of the Bahamas, the breathtaking landscapes of Switzerland, the vast wilderness of Canada, and the bustling markets of Morocco. Each destination provided new experiences and adventures, enriching their bond as a family and broadening their horizons.

Yet, no matter where his travels took him, Sam’s heart remained anchored at home with the people he loved most. The warmth of his family's laughter and the joy of shared moments were the true treasures he cherished. For Sam, each adventure was not just about the places they visited, but also about strengthening the connections that mattered most, reminding his daughters that love and family are the greatest adventures of all.

Faith was the cornerstone of his life. A devoted member of Bethel Second Baptist Church for more than 50 years, Sam served as a deacon, trustee board member, and Sunday school teacher. He not only practiced his faith but lived it through his actions—mentoring young leaders, serving those in need, and uplifting his community.

He often found peace in the words of Dr. Charles Stanley, whose messages of perseverance and faith mirrored the principles he held dear.

A FAMILY MAN, A LASTING LEGACY, A LIFE WELL LIVED

Above all, Sam was a man of family. His greatest joy was being the devoted husband of 66 years to his beloved wife, Alma R. (Turner) Bone, whom he married in 1957 and together, they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and boundless love.

As a father, he was more than a parent—he was a guide, a protector, and a steady rock to their three children: Sheri Lyn, Roderick Vann, and Raquel Alana. He loved nothing more than being surrounded by family, sharing stories, and filling the room with laughter. Whether cracking jokes, reminiscing about the past, or imparting wisdom in his own lighthearted way, Sam had a gift for making every gathering feel like a celebration. And when it came to food, he never let a meal go to waste—earning the nickname “the garbage disposal” for his legendary love of eating. He especially loved Mexican food and anything his sister Elizabeth would make.

Sam had a mischievous side, too—one that his children knew all too well. He delighted in terrorizing them with bugs, never missing an opportunity to surprise them with an unexpected creepy-crawly. His playful antics, paired with his quick wit, made for a childhood filled with laughter and unforgettable memories.

His brilliance was evident from an early age, and his younger siblings were fascinated by his intelligence. They watched in awe as he effortlessly used a slide rule, a skill that seemed like pure magic to them. His love for learning and problem-solving left a lasting impression, inspiring those around him to embrace knowledge with the same curiosity and passion that he did.

Sam was preceded in death by two brothers, William Bone Sr. and Earnest Bone, as well as two sisters, Marjorie L. Bone and Elizabeth Bone Nance. He is survived by his siblings from Huntsville, Alabama, which include his sisters Clara Matthews, Hattie Burruss (Robert), Cynthia Holden, Vera Leslie, and Gloria Bone, along with his brothers Walter Bone (Haley) and Jimmy Bone.

His extended family, friends, and the countless lives he influenced through mentorship and activism will forever carry his light. His laughter, his stories, and the love he so freely gave will echo in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Sam Bone Jr. lived a life not for himself, but for others. He spoke for the voiceless, fought for the forgotten, and stood as a beacon of hope in the face of injustice. Though he has left this world, his spirit remains—in the lessons he taught, the lives he shaped, and the love he poured into his family and community.
