Oscar S. Smith

Oscar S. Smith, 81 years old of Las Cruces, NM died Sunday, March 27, 2005 at his home. He was born October 31, 1923 in New Carlisle, Indiana to Oscar and Alma Smith. Oscar had served and retired from the US Army in 1966 where he had received the Bronze Star. He then went to work for the State of Arizona as a truck driver and retired after 15 years. In 1987 he moved to Las Cruces. Oscar was a life member of the VFW. He was very active in Elks Lodge. He was a life member of BPOE and was also past Exalted Ruler at the Douglas, AZ Lodge. Oscar was a New Mexico member since 1987 and had been awarded Elk of the Year three times. All who knew and loved him will dearly miss Oscar. Oscar is survived by his wife Gertrud of Las Cruces, NM; one brother John A. Smith of Orlando, FL; good friends Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Brown and family of Tucson, AZ; a niece, Mrs. C. Vogt and a nephew J.R. Riffle both of South Bend, Indiana and many other nieces and nephews. His parents, three sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. At his request cremation has taken place and burial of his ashes will take place at 1 PM on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery with full military honors.
