Michael J. Castillo Michael "Mike" J. Castillo, 62, of Las Cruces, NM went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 10, 2018. Mike was born, April 16, 1956, to Leonardo and Lorenza Castillo and raised in Salem, NM with his brothers, Danny and Rick, whom he stayed very close to throughout his life. He attended Hatch Valley Public Schools and was a prominent Hatch Valley High School athlete who played football, track, and baseball. At one point during his HS football career, he was nominated to the Prep All-American Football Team for his outstanding play, which included scoring eight touchdown passes in one game. After high school, Mike married his high school sweetheart, Cindy Serna, in 1974 and had three children: Mike Jr., Mario, and Jennifer. Mike and his family lived in Texas and California over the years. During his time in California, Mike grew to love oldies music, particularly Brenton Wood, along with developing a loyalty to West Coast sports teams, which include the LA Dodgers, LA Lakers, and Oakland Raiders (RAIDER NATION). Mike eventually settled in New Mexico and worked for New Mexico Department of Transportation where he was a Civil Engineer Tech and recently retired. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Leonardo Castillo, and brother, Leonardo Jr. He is survived by his wife, Cindy Castillo (Serna); his children: Mike (Kathy) Castillo Jr., Mario (Bertha) Castillo, and Jennifer (Jesse) Castillo; his brothers: Danny (Saundra) Castillo and Rick (Trish) Castillo; and his mother Lorenza Castillo. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Isabella, Ava, Olivia, Devin, Melissa, Robert (Bobby), and Maria (Cessy) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 9:00 am - 9:30 am followed by the Rosary and Funeral Services beginning at 9:30 am and 10:00 am with Father Alejandro Reyes officiating on Friday, August 17, 2018 at Our Lord of Mercy Catholic Church in Hatch, NM. Interment will follow at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Salem, NM where he will be laid to rest. Serving as pallbearers will be Jason Castillo, Rick O. Castillo, Devin Gurule, Robert (Bobby) Chavez, Ruben Castillo, Ponche Morales, Greg Johnson, and Dennis Sanchez. The family would like to thank the wonderful and caring staff at Mesilla Valley Hospice/La Posada. Their compassion and care will not be forgotten. Brother Mike will be missed by friends and especially by his family. As he loved to watch his beloved Raiders every week, it is only fitting to say goodbye with the Raider Nation chant….Rrraaaaiiiiddddeeerrrs. We love you. First Visitation
