Mathias Paul Schauer, born January 15, 1942, passed away at University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas on February 12, 2024, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Paul was a proud U.S. Army veteran who served in the HHC 3/508 Airborne Infantry Regiment from 1962-1965 in Panama. After his honorable discharge from military service, he served as a peace officer for the Mequon Police Department in Mequon, Wisconsin for 11 years before relocating to New Mexico and working as a gunsmith and machinist. He was meticulous and perfectionist in his work, and elevated gunsmithing and machining to art forms.
He loved his family more than anything in this world. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Linda Schauer, for 57 years, and a loving father to his two children, son Mathias Paul Schauer and daughter Lisa Schauer. He also adored his dogs, and will be remembered by many as the tough guy who was usually carrying a cute little dog around. He’ll be happy to see his furry friend, Oscar, in heaven, though his little buddy, Peaches, misses him.
He enjoyed “nice movies” where nobody gets hurt, science fiction books, exploring the deserts of New Mexico, sunsets, and good meals with friends and family. His door and his ears were always open to friends who wanted to spend time in his shop or just spend time and talk.
Paul was preceded in death by his sister, Martha “Marti” Kay Nidy, his brother, Clay Schauer, and his nephew, Scott Nidy. He is survived by his wife and children, and extended family in Wisconsin.
His family is grateful to the staff at University Medical Center in El Paso, Texas, for their compassionate care and communication during his final days. Per his wishes, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations you wish to make be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).
