Mary Eleanor Beaty Freeland died at the Village at Northrise assisted living center on September 26, 2019 in Las Cruces, New Mexico at the age of 95. Mary is survived by her two sisters, Shirley Roberts of California and Jean Cole of Indiana; four nieces; and four nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Freeland; son, Kent Freeland; and daughter-in-law, Vicki Freeland. Mary was born in Rawson, Ohio on July 7, 1924 to Leonard and Mary Jane (Campbell) Beaty. She graduated from Rockford High School in Rockford, Ohio in 1942 and Elk Hart Business University in 1945. She married Lloyd Freeland on February 25, 1945 while Lloyd was home on furlough. She worked at Kingsbury Ordinance Plant and Bendix through Manpower. In 1962, she and Lloyd moved to New Mexico where she began working for JCPenney's. She worked her way through many positions at Penney's, but was most proud of her years as Stockroom Coordinator. She retired from Penney's after 22 years of service. Mary was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in August, 1970. She loved to serve others. She and Lloyd served two missions for their Church-one mission to the North Dakota Rapid City Mission and the other to the Church History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. Mary was an avid genealogist and compiled several books on her family history. She and Lloyd served as ordinance workers in the Albuquerque, New Mexico Temple from 2000-2002. They worked for Habitat for Humanity, helped build Unidad Park, and loved to get hot air balloons ready for launch. They took weekly walks through Apodaca Park and the old golf course to pick up trash. They also often picked up trash along Highway70. Mary and Lloyd loved adventure! Once they retired, they bought a motorcycle and enjoyed many trips together, a Para plane to soar over Las Cruces, and spent many hours in the desert looking for insulators that had fallen from power poles. Mary loved to be outside and could be found mowing her lawn and pulling weeds until the age of 93 when her health required her to move into an assisted living facility. Mary's funeral is scheduled for Monday, September 30, 2019 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 3210 Venus Street in Las Cruces, New Mexico. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Aid.
