Lawrence Ford 'Slick' Johnson

July 15, 1949 — October 2, 2018

Lawrence E. Johnson was born on July 15, 1949 in Dallas, Texas to the parentage of Mr. Rubin Lee and Susie Mae Johnson who have preceded him in death along with his sister Virginia Jackson. Lawrence (Slick) Johnson was a 1968 graduate of Alamogordo Senior High School. Lawrence continued his education at Western New Mexico University in Silver City, New Mexico where he earned a master's degree in Education. Lawrence spent 41 years in the Alamogordo Public Schools system as a coach, teacher, counselor, and administrator. He served as the Alamogordo High School athletic director for 21 years and retired in 2013. In 2004 he was the first African American to be inducted into the NMAA Hall of Fame. Lawrence continued to live in Alamogordo, until October 2, 2018, when God called him home. God says, "come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Lawrence is now pain free and receiving his rest. Known and loved by many, Coach Johnson leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Carolyn Wagoner Johnson of Alamogordo, NM and three daughters, Carla Johnson (Lolita) of Haslet, TX, Erika Johnson (Christopher) of McKinney, TX and Aisha Thomas (Darrian) of San Antonio, TX. Three sisters, Regina Wright (Robert) of Krum, TX, Arlene Gibson (George) of Denton, TX, Darlene Johnson of Alamogordo, NM, eight grandchildren, six nieces, four nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
