It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Laurence T Madewell, also known as “Larry” or “Dood”. Larry departed this world on April 12, 2025, at the age of 70. He was surrounded by his family and passed peacefully.
Larry was born on July 17, 1954, in Portland Oregon. He lived a life full of laughter, kindness, generosity, and warmth, touching the hearts of everyone he met. Larry was a dedicated and loving family member, always putting the needs of others before his own.
Throughout his life, Larry was known for his unwavering integrity, hard work, and dedication. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1972, serving proudly for six years as a Track Vehicle Mechanic, Wheel Vehicle Mechanic, and Tank Turret Mechanic. After retiring from NMSU, where he worked at White Sands Missile Range as an Electronic Systems Technologist, Larry continued his passionate work, as a contractor with the Army Research Laboratory under Head Engineering Services. During his tenure with NMSU, Larry considered it a great honor to be part of a team that developed and supported a signal jamming system. His efforts included spending a year in Al-Fallujah, Iraq, where he provided crucial support to the United States Marines. Larry's significant contributions to his field will be fondly remembered by his colleagues and friends.
Larry met Rachel at a New Year’s Eve party while stationed at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, in 1975. For Larry, it was love at first sight. He proposed to Rachel the following Valentine's Day, only to be met with the response, "Are you crazy?" However, Larry quickly won her over, and they married in June 1976. Throughout their 48 years together, they faced many challenges and celebrated numerous triumphs, always holding hands, skipping, and smiling.
He cherished spending time with his family, playing cornhole, golfing, and hunting, as well as rooting for the Dallas Cowboys. His most treasured memories always included moments shared with his loved ones.
Larry is survived by his wife Rachel Madewell, daughter Veronica Madewell, grandchildren: Chloe Madewell, Dominic Padilla, and Jaylyn Padilla, sisters: Doris Lowell, Laura Madewell, and Wendy Madewell, brother Junior Madewell, sisters-in-law: Amelia Unpingco and Sally Flores, along with many other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly. His legacy of love and compassion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Larry was predeceased in death by his mother Bonnie Madewell, father Billy Madewell, and granddaughter Jaylee Padilla. He was also predeceased by his brothers-in-law Juan Unpingco and Mike Flores.
