Kenneth Earl Sabo

August 23, 1939 — July 29, 2024

Kenneth Earl Sabo passed away on July 29, 2024, at the age of 84 in Las Cruces, NM. Ken's kind and caring nature, combined with his quick wit and snarky sense of humor, made him a beloved teacher, colleague, friend, father, grandfather, and cherished husband to Gloria. He shared his warmth, generosity, and love of the outdoors with thousands across the country through his work and volunteer efforts.

From his days on the farm to his adventures with his family and throughout his career, Ken relished being outdoors with those he loved. When their boys were young, Ken and Gloria regularly packed up the Vanagon Camper for trips to Lincoln National Forest, Cloudcroft, and Ruidoso.

In retirement, Ken and Gloria toured in their travel trailer, exploring favorite spots, visiting family in Albuquerque, and meeting their sons in Phoenix for the full NASCAR experience. He perhaps enjoyed the never-ending trailer upgrade and repair projects as much as the travel itself. Ken was also a hunter, participating in regular archery and muzzleloader hunts in the Gila National Forest. Given the number of animals he returned home with, the real trophy for him was the quality time spent with close friends in nature.

An adventurous bet among friends to commision with the U.S. Marine Corps was the first step in his career of service to others. That bet paid off big for Ken when he met Gloria while he served as a 1st Lieutenant stationed in Twentynine Palms, CA. The two launched their 59-year adventure together soon thereafter. Following his service with the Marines, Ken dedicated himself to developing youth nationwide—whether teaching science in Snyder, NE, directing the New Mexico 4-H program, or founding an organization driven by his passion for youth shooting sports. He received numerous accolades for his commitment, including the Silver Beaver Award for Distinguished Service to Youth from the Boy Scouts of America, induction into the New Mexico 4-H Hall of Fame, the Crosman Friend of Youth Shooting Award, and the New Mexico State University Meritorious Service Award. His greatest legacy might be the foundation he created that supported 4-H National Shooting Sports, which annually engaged over 500,000 youths in inclusive educational experiences.

Despite health challenges in the latter part of his life, Ken remained resilient and upbeat, never letting his condition define him. With Gloria's unwavering support, he continued to enjoy his favorite activities and cherished the joy of playing with his three grandchildren.

We are profoundly grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this challenging time. Ken will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
