Kane Henry Brenneman

From scoring seven goals a game in pee wee soccer to contentedly cuddling Pasta Cat on the couch afterwards… From his heroic Washington Post frontpage TD catch to sobbing tears when Gemma was buried… From inexplicably hyping his Texans squad from Maryland and then West Virginia to the compassion he had for anyone in his care and utter lack thereof for any impatient bosses, Kane Henry Brenneman was a character we all treasured knowing. All our memories together were already gifts, albeit sometimes chipped or a little dirty. He was a kindly giant, Kane Henry, our beloved brother, son, and friend. Always of many layers, he possessed headline talents, shocking insights, and human instinct. And he has long lived a too short life with more trauma and fewer smiles than he deserved. He truly would never harm a soul despite his all around enormous presence and self. All the world could see the good he did, but did not often enough stop to look, nor nearly often enough paused to welcome and celebrate it. Or him. Hopefully he now knows such joy as his bottomless heart every day deserves. 

This is a time to speak of kindness, generosity, gentleness, intelligence, and other wonderful things that we will always know as the essence of Kane. It is also time to use this moment to be as strong as he would want, strong enough to resist the urge to hide that his life, his potential, and his gifts were never realized, not even close. It was all cut short by the tragic cycle of opioid addiction that plagues our community and nation, and counterproductive compassionless responses harming our citizens.
