It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that the family of Josephine "Josie" Jernente announce her passing on January 16, 2025 at a hospital in EL Paso ·Tx. She was surrounded by several family members at the time of her passing.
Josie was born on October 20, 1935 to Jesus and Corine Soto. She was 89 years old. Until the very end she was still intelligent, coherent, strong-willed, loving and very talkative, but she was tired and ready to go home. She was the only one out of 6 siblings that received her high school diploma from Las Cruces High School. At the young age of 19, she married Ernest Montoya Jemente on July 31, 1954. He was 28 years old and served in the United States Navy. Together they had 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls. Josie started her career working at First National Bank as a supervisor of the proof department until her retirement at 62 years old. She was an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America as their historian. Josie will be remembered for her love and compassion for her catholic faith in Jesus Christ and her devotion to our BLESSED MOTHER MARY in saying nightly rosaries for the lost souls and her loving family. She also loved her garden, planted her flowers, watered her yard, sewed beautiful creations for her family and friends, needle pointed, worked on daily crossword puzzles "from the newspaper", played cards almost daily "with her daughter Gloria", watched her favorite TV shows; Walker Texas Ranger, John Wayne western and Perry Mason.
Those left to mourn her passing include her loving children: 3 daughters, Yolanda Black (Michael) of Austin TX, Cecilia Gomez (Kelly) of Lordsburg, NM, Gloria Jemente Hendrix of Las Cruces, and one Son Ernest Joe Jemente (Patty of Gilbert, AZ. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Josie was preceded in death by her son Claudio David Jemente (24), her husband Ernest Jemente (75), her parents Jesus (79) and Corine (90). She was preceded by brother Filomena "Phil" Soto, and her 4 sisters: Rosemary Cabrera (96), Margaret "Maggie" Villanueva (92), Herminia "Minnie" Soto "87’, Bessie Murillo "74".
At Josie's request, cremation has taken place. The prayer vigil will begin with the Rosary at 10:00 am., Tuesday February 11, 2025 at Our Lady of Health Catholic Church, 1178 N. Mesquite St. Las Cruces, NM, with the funeral mass to be celebrated right after, her interment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, 100 N Espina St.
A reception will take place back at Our Lady of Health Catholic church in the hall around 1:30 p.m.
