It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joe T. Hernandez, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, who left us peacefully on March 18, 2025, just days shy of his 93rd birthday. Born on March 23, 1932, to Manuel Hernandez and Ramona Trujillo in Las Cruces, NM, Joe T. was a beacon of love, generosity, and humor throughout his life. He is preceded in death by his cherished wife of 49 years, Alicia, his eldest son Joe Steven Hernandez, his great-granddaughter Alicia Marie, his parents, and many beloved siblings.
At the tender age of 17, Joe T. enlisted in the Army, demonstrating his courage and commitment to service with the permission of his parents. After his honorable service, including time in the Korean War, he returned to Las Cruces, where he earned his high school diploma and married the love of his life, Alicia Franco. Their 49 years of marriage were filled with laughter, love, and unwavering support for one another.
Joe T. dedicated 42 years to the New Mexico Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer V, and spent 32 years as an Electronic Technician at White Sands Missile Range. Early in his career, he worked for PSL and even moonlighted as a bartender at Tully’s Package Store, where his quick wit and infectious humor brought joy to many. Joe T.'s exemplary work ethic and devotion to his family were evident in everything he did, as he tirelessly strived to provide them with the best life possible.
After retiring in 1991 from the Army National Guard and in 1992 from White Sands Missile Range, Joe T. embraced retirement with enthusiasm. He became an avid golfer and cherished every moment spent with his family, creating lasting memories filled with laughter and love.
Joe T. is survived by his four adoring children: Paul Hernandez (wife Monica), Mark Hernandez (wife Esther), Jessica Padilla (husband Jon), Marcella Hernandez (partner Pete) and daughter-in-law Jeanne Hernandez. He leaves behind a legacy of love through his grandchildren: Jason Padilla (wife Desiree), Candice Hernandez (partner Adrian), Jenise Padilla, Andrew Hernandez (fiancé Jovanna), David Hernandez (wife Sarah), Brittany Saenz (husband Alex), Joseph Hernandez, Adriana Hernandez (fiancé Gabe), Vic Brandon Montoya, and Mark Hernandez (partner Michelle). His great-grandchildren, Xander, Kenneth, Lilly, Avery, David Jr., Christian, Johnathon, Isaiah, Siena, Dylan, Caleb, Cayden, Coraline, Isaac, Nathaniel, Eli, and Sebastian, will carry forward his spirit of kindness and joy. He is also survived by his sister Jessie Ortega and many cherished nieces and nephews.
We invite all who knew and loved Joe T. to celebrate his remarkable life. Visitation will be held on March 31st from 6:00 to 7:00 PM at Getz Funeral Home (1410 East Bowman Ave.), followed by a Rosary Prayer Vigil. A Funeral Liturgy will take place on April 1st at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Health Catholic Church (1178 North Mesquite St.). In accordance with Joe T.’s wishes, cremation and a private burial will occur at a later date.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Hacienda at Grace Village, Mesilla Valley Hospice, and Memorial Medical Center for their exceptional care during Joe T.'s final years. His legacy of love, laughter, and generosity will forever remain in our hearts.
