Johnnye F Hammett

September 9, 1927 — March 3, 2022

Born on September 9, 1927 Johnnye lived 94 years and left us on March 3, 2022. She is survived by her sons John David and Jeffery and her many "kids" and grandkids. She is preceded in death by her husband Leon (Hoot) and daughter Lee Ann. Johnnye was born in Fabens, TX, graduated from Ysleta High School, and attended the College of Mines, which is now UTEP. Johnnye became a Hatch resident in 1948. She was an active member of the community and worked in the Hatch Public Schools until her retirement in 1988. During the 1990's she served on the Village Board of Trustees. She worked extensively with the local youth included 4-H Gold Clover and was inducted into the NM 4-H Hall of Fame. She was awarded the 4-H Leadership Award in 2002. Johnnye served on many committees dedicated to the beautification of our area including Dona Ana County Keep America Beautiful, Community Pride in Dona Ana County, Keep Hatch Beautiful, Keep New Mexico Beautiful. She also served as Chair of the Dona Ana County Public Housing Authority and the Hatch Museum Board. She also served on the Hatch Library Board. She was an active member of the St John's Methodist Church of Hatch until it's closing and subsequently attended Morning Star Methodist Church in Las Cruces. Johnnye was a 70 year member of Order of the Eastern Star, Past Matron of Hatch Chapter and a 52 year member of Sierra Blanca Court Order of the Amaranth. Viewing on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Getz Funeral Home in Las Cruces. Funeral service on Wednesday, March 16, 2022 at 10:00 am at the Hatch Baptist Church and interment at Rest Lawn in El Paso at 2:00 pm.

Friends of the Hatch Public Library at P.O. Box 220, Hatch, NM 87937.
