Jimmy Alvarez

March 9, 1924 — March 26, 2021

Jimmy M. Alvarez, age 97, lifelong resident of Salem, NM entered eternal rest on Friday, March 26, 2021 at University Medical Center in El Paso, TX. He was born on March 9, 1924 to Isidro and Emilia Alvarez. Jimmy was a lifelong farmer and also retired from White Sands Missile Range after 27 years of service as a bus driver. Jimmy served his country honorably during WWII, serving from Dec. 18, 1942 - February 19, 1946. He was attached to Troop B, 101st Mechanized Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron and served in the Rhineland and Central European Campaigns. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds received in battle, Good Conduct medal, and Victory medal. Survivors include his loving wife of 73 years, Elizabeth, brother Isidro Alvarez, Jr. (Iola), sister Rosemary Stutts; three daughters Norma (Edward), Linda, Patricia (Ollis "Bubba"); three sons Ernest Jimmy (Millie), Deciderio "Jack" (Debbie), John; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-five great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Ernesto and two sisters who died as infants. Serving as pallbearers are part of his grandchildren Andrea Marie Alvarez, Philip Levin, Matthew Gillis, Jeffery Flores, Patrick Flores, Christopher Flores, Edward James Flores, Deci Alvarez and Daniel Alvarez. Serving as honorary pallbearers are the rest of his beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. We would like to recognize and thank all the caregivers: Maria Martinez, Meily Soto, Brianna Gillespie, Andrea Scheiner, Christopher Flores and Edward Flores, all medical staff, therapists and the Veteran's Administration Health Care Team who cared for our Dad with so much love and compassion. We appreciate your dedication and kindness. A public viewing is scheduled for 5:00 - 6:00 pm Monday, April 5, 2021 at Getz Funeral Home Chapel. Covid-19 guidelines will be followed. Capacity inside the funeral home will be limited to ten (10) people at a time. A holy rosary will take place at 6: 00 pm and will be limited to siblings and brother. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday April 6, 2021 at Holy Cross Cemetery in Salem, New Mexico. Rosary Service
