Jimmie Benjamin Chavez

Jimmie B Chavez, 88, of Las Cruces quietly and peacefully left us on 26 July 2023 to join his wife and son in his heavenly home. He touched the lives of so many and will be missed by all that were fortunate enough to know him. Jimmie was born on 24 December 1934 in Socorro, NM to Isaac and Clarita (Gomez) Chavez. He was the youngest of 4 children. He met the girl that would become his bride when he was 20. He and Dora Arvizu were married on 30 June 1956 at San Miguel Catholic Church. They had 3 children and spent 66 amazing years together. Jimmie served his country for 12 years in the New Mexico National Guard and was honorably discharged. He also drove his dad's school bus route for the Socorro Public Schools. He then worked at Stallion Range Military Facility WSMR. He loved working on cars, so he started working for Tolliver and Sons. When the company relocated from Socorro to Las Cruces, he went with it. He eventually became their Chief Machinist. After working many years with them he decided to open his own shop and Jim's Auto Machine was born. He finally retired and closed the shop after 42 years. Jimmie is survived by daughters Clarissa Chavez of Las Cruces and Dorene (Skip) Tackett of Harker Heights, TX. Grandchildren Brandi (Ruben) Polanco, David Weinrich II, Jennifer (Joe) Chavez and Diego Medina all of Las Cruces. Jason Tackett of Hurst TX, Bryan Tackett of Killeen TX, Keith (Alexandra) Tackett of New Braunfels TX and Ethan Tackett of Harker Heights TX. Fifteen great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and many loving nephews, nieces and in-laws. He is Preceded in death by his loving wife Dora (Arvizu) Chavez, son James Chavez, father and mother Isaac and Clarita Chavez, 2 brothers Isaac Chavez Jr and Joe Green and wife Gertrude, 1 sister Virginia Taylor and husband Edmond. Services will be held on Friday, August 11, 2023, 10:00 am at Getz Funeral Home, 1410 E Bowman Ave in Las Cruces. He will be laid to rest next to his wife and son. Interment will be held at St Joseph Cemetery at 12:00 noon with Father Thio of St. Genevieve's Church providing a grave side blessing. He will be laid to rest next to his wife and son. A memorial reception will be held at St. Genevieve's Parish Hall immediately following. Service Information
