Jerry Lopez

November 29, 1953 — December 25, 2022

Jerry Lopez, born Jerome Dennis Lopez in Santa Fe, NM on November 29, 1953, after a brief illness he passed peacefully with his family and friends in his home on December 25, 2022. He is preceded in death by his parents Louis & Agapita Lopez, his brothers Julian Lopez, Jessie Lopez, Phillip Lopez, Richard Lopez and Raymond Lopez. Jerry grew up in Albuquerque, where he graduated from high school and after one year at New Mexico Highlands University he began helping the family business in auto body painting. He then moved to Las Cruces in 1984 and began working at the City of Las Cruces gas department beginning as a meter reader and after 25 years retired as the Leak Survey Tech. During his retirement he enjoyed golfing with his friends that lovingly named him J-LO and maintained an 18 handicap. He enjoyed fishing, boating and hunting with his brothers and truly loved traveling with his family to all the fun places including a couple of cruising trips. Many will remember his talent as an ELVIS, and he pulled it off perfectly. Jerry is survived by his wife Sylvia Lauer of 42 years, his daughter Sheila Lauer Gonzalez, son-in-law Abe Gonzalez, also grandchildren Stephanie Gonzalez and Joey Gonzalez. Although he loved all his family his youngest precious granddaughter, who was the love of his life, Demetria Sophia Gonzalez, shared the love of music and she loved calling him "Abu" which made him so proud. He also had another little girl he loved "Gabby" his favorite shih tzu puppy. He is survived by his brother Patrick Larry Lopez and many nieces and nephews. All of his family and friends will miss his handsome smile. Services will be Monday, January 16th, at Holy Cross Church, 1327 N. Miranda St. with a rosary at 10AM and a Catholic mass immediately following. Internment of his remains will be placed at the Holy Cross Columbarium. A memorial reception will follow at the Moose Lodge 514 N. Main. Service arrangements are entrusted to the care of Getz Funeral Homes at 1410 E. Bowman Ave. Las Cruces, NM 575-526-2419.
