Jean R. Frederick

January 31, 1930 — July 7, 2013

Ruby Jean Ridge Frederick was born in Wink, Texas on January 31, 1930 and passed away on July 7, 2013 at the age of 83, in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Jean was born to Fannie Mae and Clarence A. Ridge in the oilfields of Texas, where her father served as the Methodist minister to oil workers and the small community of Wink. Jean attended Southern Methodist University before marrying Bert Frederick on May 9,1952. Jean lived in Las Cruces and attended Las Cruces High School during World War II while her father was the minister at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. She and Bert returned to Las Cruces to make their permanent home here in 1963. An avid golfer, Jean figured prominently in the Las Cruces area women's golf community, and enjoyed playing courses all across the state and the country. Over her years as a golfer, she won numerous Jill of Hill and other awards for her fine play in local tournaments. While her children were growing up, Jean travelled annually with her family to Mexico for deep sea fishing vacations. In later years she and her family travelled to Britain and Italy for sightseeing and culinary adventures. In Scotland she fulfilled a long-held dream of visiting St. Andrew's golf course with her husband, Bert. Her friends and family remember most her open and loving heart, her unfailing smile that remained with her until the very end of her life. She always loved a person as much as they needed, not as much as they asked or deserved. We will also remember her fondness for very short dogs. Jean had several dachshunds over the years and it is impossible to remember her without also remembering one or the other of her beloved doxies on her lap or at her heels. Jean is survived by her husband Bert Frederick, son Bert Frederick and wife Lety Frederick, daughter Tina Frederick Lutz and husband Mike Lutz, Jr. of Las Cruces, son Phil and Debbie Frederick of Waco, Texas, daughter Tish Frederick of Albuquerque, New Mexico, by her sister, Latisha Smidt and husband Jim Smidt, and her brother, C.A. Ridge and wife Judy Baird Ridge. Jean is also survived by her nine grandchildren Bill, Brittney, Deidre, Rebecca, Bryanna, Ridge, Bruce, Micaela and Catalina, and great-grandchild Bentley. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fannie Mae and Clarence Ridge, as well as her sister, Kathryn DeMoss. The celebration of Jean's life will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., St. Paul's United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to either Safe Haven Animal Sanctuary or Mesilla Valley Hospice. PDF Printable Version
