Beloved wife, mother, teacher and friend Janet Elizabeth Shearin of Las Cruces, New Mexico passed away Wednesday, April 8th 2015 at La Posada, Mesilla Valley Hospice at the age of 60 years old. Janet was born 1/10/55 in Brawley, California to Warren and Arlene Schoneman. She was the youngest child with three older brothers Thomas the eldest, followed by David and Richard. Janet was very active in 4-H and Rainbow Girls throughout her childhood eventually holding the position of Grand Love of California. She graduated with honors from both Brawley Union High School, and Imperial Valley College with an Associates degree. After a short time at San Diego State University she transferred to New Mexico State University (NMSU) graduating in 1979 as a Crimson Scholar with a Bachelor of Science focusing on Dietetics. Janet worked as a dietitian, legal secretary and escrow officer. She eventually returned to school while continuing to work full time and in 1996 received her teaching certificate in Science and a Masters degree in Education from NMSU. Janet's first teaching experience was at White Sands Middle School in 1997. She transferred to Las Cruces High School to teach Chemistry and Physical Science for the remaining 17 years of her career until her retirement in 2014. Janet loved teaching and her students and would often go above and beyond for students and fellow teachers. She was recognized as teacher of the month on multiple occasions and was beloved by her colleagues and students. Janet and Dan were married at Brawley Methodist Church in California on 12/29/79. She gave birth to her daughter Amanda on 8/8/84 in Roswell, New Mexico. One of her proudest events in her life was when her daughter Amanda graduated as a Doctor of Pharmacy in 2011 from the University of New Mexico. Janet loved gardening, hiking, animals, music and playing piano, relaxing on her patio with her pets and family, reading mystery novels, cooking, tailgating and supporting the Las Cruces High School Bulldawgs and NMSU Aggies. She enjoyed traveling which included trips to Australia, Alaska, Hawaii, and family vacations/road trips throughout the United States. Survived by husband Dan Shearin of Las Cruces and daughter Amanda Shearin of Albuquerque. Preceded in death by her parents Warren and Arlene Schoneman. Services will be held Wednesday, April 15th at 10:00 AM at Getz Funeral Home Chapel immediately followed by burial at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Reception TBA. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Memorial Medical Center-Cancer Center or La Posada-Mesilla Valley Hospice.
