James and Justine O'Brien both age 86, James passed away on November 8, 2023. Justine E. (Appler) O'Brien passed ten days later on November 18, 2023. James was born on August 1, 1937, in Clifton, NJ, Justine E. (Appler) O'Brien was born June 30, 1937, in Chicago IL.


James and Justine O'Brien met in Lincoln, Nebraska, at a military dance, and it was love at first sight. James, originally from Clifton, NJ, and Justine, originally from Chicago, IL, were married in Omaha, NE, in 1959. They embarked on a journey together, traveling the world for 22 years, courtesy of the USAF. Their travels took them to Japan, England, Germany, and many other countries. While James had his TDY's, Justine managed the fort at home, taking care of their three children.


Upon retirement, James and Justine settled in Alamogordo, NM. James after earning his degree at NMSU taught at NMSVH and managed the foster grandparent program and special education events. Justine, on the other hand, became a business owner of pampered pets then changed the name to the dog house . The Dog Ranch, where she groomed and boarded animals and also sold real estate. Both James and Justine had a deep love for people. James was known for his quick wit and storytelling abilities. James was also a garage sale guru and eventually opened his own business on HWY 70. Justine would always make their treasures shine. Together, they were an unstoppable team, celebrating 65 years of marriage. It is no wonder that being apart for just 10 days felt like a lifetime. They are now reunited.


James and Justine O'Brien are survived by their eldest son, Patrick O'Brien (Tina), two daughters, Lisa Varin (Anthony) with two boys, and Shelly Cervini (Christopher) with one son and one daughter. They are also survived by their son Michael O'Brien (Dolly) with two sons and one daughter, Jason O'Brien (Karen) with two sons and one daughter, Travis O'Brien (Amanda) with one daughter and one son, Amanda Vargas (Ricky) with five sons, survived by their daughter Louise jeans Sugamosto (Ronald) with one daughter and one son, Megan Monger (Tallen) with two sons, and William Monger (NMtech). In addition, James and Justine are survived by five step-grandchildren and nine great step- grandchildren.


James and Justine O'Brien’s educational journey led them to NMSU, where they pursued higher education. James received Two Master degrees and Justine art and real estate.


Having served in the USAF, James made significant contributions to their military associations with the support of his wife Justine.


A private memorial service will be held later in the summer. A small family reunion to honor James and Justine O'Brien's life.


In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Amber Hospice Care in memory of James and Justine O'Brien.
