Gwendolyn Veile Edington

October 30, 1929, to April 17, 2024

Gwen was born in Tooele, Utah to Leman Conrad Veile and Afton Rebecca Veile. She was the oldest sibling to Lois and Dale. The family moved around in the western United States including Gardner, Montana and McGill, Nevada. Gwen spoke fondly of her years growing up near Yellowstone National Park. She finished high school in Vernal, Utah. Gwen went on to her first year of college at Brigham Young University before being called to the North central states mission, which included Toronto, Canada, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

She returned to BYU after her mission, but her tuition was stolen, and she had to return to work to earn money for another semester. She went to work in Denver where she met a dashing Air Force Lieutenant, Everett Dewey Edington. When he plucked up the courage to ask her to marry him, Gwen laughed as she would recall saying, “I told him, well I guess so.” and they were married on October 1, 1953. Four children followed, Lynette, Brent, Ann, and Claudia. In the early years of marriage, they moved all around the United States from Arizona, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, California and finally spent most of their life in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Gwen returned to school and became a sixth-grade teacher and reading specialist. After retiring from teaching Gwen continued her world travels to Yemen and Pakistan helping Everett with assignments with U.S. Agency for International Development. In Pakistan she was the principal of The American School. After returning to the states, it wasn’t long until Everett and Gwen returned to their travels by filling missions for their church to Canada and St. Vincent in the West Indies.

Gwen’s greatest joy was the gospel of Jesus Christ, her children, and learning. She is proceeded in death by her parents, sister and brother and husband. She is survived by her four children, Lynette Smith, Brent Edington (Claudia Edington), Ann Edington Adams (Kevin Ridd) and Claudia Edington, multiple grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Even those who were not related to her will remember her as Grandmother, as she was a grandmother to all. She is forever missed.
