Gladys Goff Herman

August 2, 1918 — January 6, 2017

Gladys (Jane) Goff Herman passed from this life on 6 January 2017 in Las Cruces NM after a long and courageous battle with dementia and Alzheimer's. She was 98 years old. Jane is survived by her two sons, Joe D. Herman, Jr. and his wife Janice and Glenn Herman and his wife Sherrie, both of Las Cruces; four grandchildren David Herman and wife Kristy of Shawnee OK, Julie DeLaO and husband Anthony of Fredonia NY, Janell Mickelson and husband Kyle of Houston TX, and Jena Berry and husband Brian of Portales NM. She is also survived by nine great grandchildren - Michael Herman, Emilee Berry, Bria Berry, Kaylee DeLaO, Cameron DeLaO, Garrett Mickelson, Aubrey Mickelson, Makenzy Herman and Macy Herman. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Joe D. Herman, Sr.; by two grandchildren, Amy Lynn Herman and Joe D. Herman III; and by two great-great grandsons, Tristen Jody Herman and Taylor Glenn Herman. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. Jane was born to George Allman Goff and Nannie Arvin Goff on 02 Aug 1918 in Woodville OK. When Gladys was first seen by her Dad he said "there is my little Jane". From that day on she was always called Jane. She graduated from Woodville High School as Valedictorian of her class and later attended Southeastern State College in Durant Ok where she met her future husband Joe D. Herman, Sr. as he "slid down the clothesline" at a get acquainted party at the college. It was love at first sight and, after a long courtship, they were married in Madill OK on 7 January 1939. Jane was teaching school in Woodville, but resigned and went with her new husband to Colgate OK where he began his lifelong career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a statistician for the Crop and Livestock Reporting Service. Jane also began her new career as wife, homemaker, and mother. Joe's work with the U.S.D.A. took them to Las Cruces NM (1940-1942), Austin TX (1946-1956), Washington DC (1956-1964), and then back to Las Cruces NM in 1964 where they stayed to be close to family and friends. Jane's dedication to and love for her immediate family and her extended church family probably best characterizes her life. She took immense pride in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and celebrated their accomplishments and shared in their grief. She was always there for them with a quiet strength that had love of God and family as it's foundation. Jane and Joe were active members and leaders in the Church of Christ for all of their adult lives. Jane's strong faith and dedication to God has served as an inspiration to many over the years. She lived her life as an example to others and there was never any question that God, the church, family, and service to others were the important things in life. Her home was always a place where people where comfortable, entertained, and well fed - in particular her grandchildren and their friends who routinely came over from Las Cruces High School for one of her famous sandwiches. Her influence for good touched the many people that she came in contact with during her time on this earth. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 P.M. on 12 January 2017 at Getz Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 A.M. on 13 January 2017 at the Getz Funeral Home with Dean Peugh officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
