Gerald Wetherill

March 30, 1937 — February 19, 2021

Gerald Edward Wetherill (Ed) and Johanna Helen Wetherill (Schatzi) Ed (83) and Helen (81) husband and wife for 59 years transitioned into eternal life to be with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 17, 2021 and February 19, 2021 respectively in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Gerald (Ed) Wetherill was born March 30, 1937 in Kenton, Ohio to Paul Donald Wetherill and Ruth Mae Wamack. Johanna Reichel (Schatzi) was born May 5, 1939 in Nurnberg, Germany to Konrad Reichel and Elizabeth Igle. Ed is a retired Sergeant First Class veteran of the United States Army Artillery having served his county honorably for 28 years. Helen was a dedicated homemaker and served in the food and beverage industry for most of her life. They were married in Nurnberg, Germany during his military tour on October 5, 1962. After retiring from WSMR in 1981, Ed and Helen made their lifetime home in Las Cruces where Ed also retired from the Dona Ana County Detention Center. Ed and Helen were continually active in their community. Ed served as a Trustee for the Military Order of the Cooties, a Chaplin of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge. Helen served as the President of the VFW Auxiliary, Department President of the VFW Auxiliary, Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary President, member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge and Military Order of the Cooties. Together they shared a full life and their love for one another was evident as they withstood life's challenges and enjoyed many blessings, especially their daughter, grandson and friends. They are survived by their only daughter Petra Wetherill living in Peekskill, NY and grandson Christopher Shawn Wetherill (Shawn) living in Las Cruces. Ed is preceded in death by his father, Paul Donald Wetherill and stepmother, Jessie Fern Wetherill, his stepfather, Jerome L. Hofsteater and mother, Ruth Mae Wamack Hofsteater. Helen is preceded in death by her stepfather Adrian J. De Graaf and mother Elizabeth De Graaf, her natural father Konrad Reichel, her brothers Hans Reichel and Werner De Graaf, her sister Doris Kurzdorfer and her niece Nina De Graaf. Ed and Helen loved their family and friends dearly and they were genuinely loved by all who knew them and will be deeply missed. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Las Cruces, New Mexico on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at 1pm. A Memorial Service will be held following the gravesite services at the VFW 10124, 709 S.
