Genaro P. Martinez

Genaro "Geno" Padron Martinez, 82, of Las Cruces, went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 4, 2018. Genaro was born in Santa Rita, NM on May 23, 1935 to Jesus M. Martinez and Luz Padron. He attended Santa Rita Public Schools and worked for Marblelite Products in Fierro, NM before joining the United States Air Force. While in the Air Force, he was stationed at Cannon AFB in Clovis, NM and later transferred to Johnston Island in the Pacific Ocean. He served in the USAF from 1954 - 1962; 4 years active duty and 4 years in the Air Force Reserves and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal before his Honorable Discharge. On December 20, 1958, he married the "Love of his Life" Concha "Connie" Silva. They moved to Gilroy, CA and during his time in northern California, Genaro worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator where he managed his own business "Martinez Tractor Service". He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local Union No. 3 and the GI Forum. After returning to New Mexico, Geno was busy building their beautiful new home and working on the landscaping. Genaro loved talking to people and making new friends, listening to music, watching sports and collecting Art. He was a devoted member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in the Diocese of the Rio Grande where he and Connie would minister on both sides of the border. After he could no longer travel, Geno would still donate to the food banks to feed the hungry, as well as many other charities. Genaro is survived by his sister Margaret and husband Rey Merino of McAllen, Tx, brothers Felipe Martinez and wife Celestina of San Jose, CA, Baltazar Martinez and wife Ginnie of Rocklin, CA. Brothers-in-law Lee Colby and Santos Silva, Sisters-in-law Maria and Lupe Martinez, and numerous God Children, Nieces, Nephews, Cousins and many Dear Friends and Neighbors. He was preceded in death by his wife Connie, parents Jesus M. and Luz Martinez, mother and father in law Francisco and Dolores Silva, sister Teresa Colby, brothers Gilbert, Willie and Manuel Martinez. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at 11:00am at St. Andrews Episcopal Church located at 518 N. Alameda, Las Cruces, NM. Military Honors for Genaro Martinez will be held outside of the Church after the Memorial Service. A reception will follow the service in the Church hall.
