Frances Ann Stevens

May 20, 1930 — August 6, 2016

On the morning of August 6th, 2016, Frances passed away at the Mountain View Advanced Care facility after a long battle with cancer. She was comforted by her son, her daughter and daughter's husband, and her niece at the time of her passing. Frances Ann (Bennett) Stevens was born on May 20, 1930 in Poteau, Oklahoma. She was only a few years old when her family moved to Silver City, NM, where she lived until she went away to college at UNM. After college she spent a brief time in California before moving to Las Cruces where she met her husband, Bill Stevens. Frances started her career in education in Las Cruces as a 2nd grade teacher for the public schools. After some years of teaching she moved into a school counselor role, and then in to Administration, running early childhood education and federal programs for LCPS. Later, she went back to school, receiving both a masters degree and her educational doctorate from NMSU. Frances held Associate Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent positions for many years with LCPS until she retired. After retirement, she ran for, and was elected to the NM State School Board where she served two terms. Frances was a selfless, very positive person, and passionate about her community, specifically about children's education in Las Cruces and the state of New Mexico. In her private life Frances loved to travel and experience new places, people, and cultures. She was a supporter of the arts, and she loved NMSU Aggie basketball. Frances was wealthy in friends and many people that loved her and respected her. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Click. Her son, Will Stevens, his wife, Michelle, and son, Wesley. Her daughter, Sarah, and Sarah's husband, Justin. Sarah's daughter Taylor and Taylor's fianc Brandon Miera. Sarah's son Kyle, his wife, Kylie, and their daughter Annabeth. A funeral service will be held for Frances on Wednesday, August 10th at 10:00am with a reception following at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 518 N. Alameda Blvd. Las Cruces, NM 88005.
