It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eddie Romero Montoya “Wardo”, on Sunday March 17,2024 at the age of 77. He was surrounded by his loving family in the comfort of his home in Tortugas, NM. Wardo was born in Hayward, California on September 6,1946 to Manuel and Minnie Montoya. He was the oldest child of five being the only son.
Wardo is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Mary Frances. Their three children: Linda, Raymond and Michael. Eight grand-children: Jessica, Elissa, Rhealeen, Kaila, Jacob, Mathew, Erica and Mia. Two Great-Grandchildren: Jenayah and London. Four sisters, Crucita, Mary, Norine and Annie, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and God children. Wardo was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Minnie Montoya, and two loving children Eddie Jr and Michelle.
Wardo joined the United States Army in 1966 and served his country proudly. He worked for Phelps Dodge in the mines in Morenci, Arizona for 10 years, moving back to his home town to retire from the City of Las Cruces. Wardo was an active dedicated member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. You would normally hear him on Thursday nights, calling bingo numbers patiently waiting for I-22 “Deucey Deucey” and do a little whistle. He was a member of the Tortugas cemetery crew, American Legion and a frequent visitor of any surrounding casino. If Wardo wasn’t at a sporting event supporting his grand children, you could find him sitting in front of the TV watching his Denver Broncos.
