Obituary for Maj. Donald R. Schryer, USAF (Ret.) On December 14, 2022, Major Donald R. Schryer slipped his earthly bonds for his final flight. He was born on May 27, 1944 in Mt. Clemens, MI. The family traveled through several states before he settled in Las Cruces to attend New Mexico State University. He earned his bachelors in Mechanical Engineering in 1967 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the United States Air Force. Throughout the next twenty-one years he served as a pilot and Executive Officer. His first assignment after flight school was as a Forward Air Controller in Viet Nam. Following his return he flew C-141 and C-5A transports throughout the world carrying troops and equipment in support of his country. He was an instructor and flight examiner in both aircraft. Don also helped develop the curriculum used to train C-5 pilots. He was also selected as an exchange officer and flew the VC-10 with the Royal Air Force. After his retirement from the Air Force, Don continued to use his flying skills as a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He worked as a Quality Control Engineer for several manufacturing companies and as a TAC Officer at NMMI before retiring again. Don is survived by his wife of fifty- three years, Janice, and his children, Kelly Mahres (Miles) and Adam Schryer (Asheley). His two grandchildren, Connor and Natalie Mahres brought him much joy. He also leaves behind his younger brother, Jack Schryer. Don was devoted to his family and was always the first to offer help to those in need. He loved old cars and his many dogs who were always by his side. His family wishes to thank the generous and gentle staff of Mesilla Valley Hospice for making his final days comfortable and supporting the family members who were by his side. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to dementia research.
