Donald J. Lewis

Donald Joe Lewis, known to most as "D.J.", 70, of Las Cruces, New Mexico passed away July 31, 2017 at his home in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He was born to Dorothy and Joe Lewis of McAlester, Oklahoma on April 30, 1947, in El Paso, Texas at William Beaumont General Hospital. D.J. graduated from Savanna High School in Savanna Oklahoma in the year of 1965. His tenure with the department began in 1974, when he volunteered with Dona Ana County Sherriff's Auxiliary as a reserve deputy. He was hired at the sheriff's department in September of 1987 and earned his law enforcement certification on March 18, 1988. He worked his way through the ranks to become a patrol sergeant, earning more than 80 certifications in various disciplines of law enforcement, including firearms marksmanship, DWI and drug interdiction, homicide investigations, domestic violence investigations, and hazardous materials incident analysis. Most recently, D.J. Lewis, worked in the Legal Division as a process server. D.J. was a loving and kind-hearted man. His grandchildren were the light of his life and he was the epitome of a loving and caring grandpa. He made it a point to be so very present in each and every aspect of their lives. He had many hobbies but he most enjoyed collecting his guns and knives. He was also a die-hard OU fan. Boomer Sooners! D.J. is an irreplaceable man, and impacted lives of so many people around him. He will be deeply missed. D.J. is survived by his son Michael B. Lewis, and his fianc Marilee S. Aranda; His beloved grandchildren Dominic V. Lewis-Rosales, Tyler J. Lewis, and Jade Tiffany Lewis, all of Las Cruces, New Mexico. He is also survived by his sister Laura Iskey; Nephews Joe and Steve Iskey as well his Niece Stephanie Iskey all of Mcalester , Oklahoma. He was also survived by several great nieces, nephews, and countless other family members and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter Tiffany Lewis, and father, Joe Lewis. Funeral arrangements are being graciously handled by Getz funeral home in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The funeral will be held at 1:30 pm on Monday, August 7th at Mesilla Park Community Church located on 1040 El Paseo Road; Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Las Cruces. Serving as pallbearers will be D.J.'s brothers and sisters of the Dona Ana Country Sherriff's Office. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to the Wells Fargo Bank "The D.J. Lewis Family Funds" which will go to a trust for the three grandchildren, that D.J. held so close and dear to his heart. PDF Printable Version Service Information
