Danly Sayles Profile Photo

Danly C. Sayles, 89, of Mesquite, NM, passed peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, February 8, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Martha Oliver Sayles; daughter, Rebekah Bachman (Dr. Steve Bachman) of Amarillo, TX; and daughter Dr. Sarah Sayles of Safford, AZ. Danly was born in El Paso, TX, on February 14, 1932, to Allen Sayles, Sr, and Clare Sayles. He graduated high school from the Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad, CA, then attended New Mexico A&M University in Las Cruces where he was active in ROTC. He graduated with a degree in General Agricultural and received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force where he served for two years and later served many years in the Air Force Reserves. When he left the Reserves, he held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He worked as a cotton buyer for Paymaster Oil Mills and a field man for Western Cotton Oil. Later he served as a loan officer and Vice President of Las Cruces Production Credit Association. Danly was baptized into the Lord in August of 1956 in a dirt stock tank at the White Sands Ranch, owned by Martha's family. They were married at the ranch in 1960 and lived there until 1972 when they moved to their current home and established Sayles Quarter Horses in Mesquite. Danly's life changed in 1974 when he had a debilitating stroke. He had to learn to walk and talk again. His family stayed by his side throughout his recovery, and it was not many years until he was able to join Martha in the management of Sayles Quarter Horses. They raised World Champion Quarter Horses and Palominos. Danly carried judging cards with 6 horse associations and judged horse shows all over the United States: The American Quarter Horse Association, American Paint Horse Association, Palomino Horse Breeders Association, Appaloosa Horse Club, International Buckskin Association, and American Buckskin Registry Association. He served as President of the Southwest Quarter Horse Association, New Mexico Palomino Horse Breeders Association, and the Zia Paint Horse Club. He won Man of the Year for both New Mexico Quarter Horse Association and Southwest Quarter Horse Association. Danly began Sayles Agricultural Inspections in 1988 and traveled around the southwestern United States inspecting farms and ranches for banks throughout the region. In 1992, Danly and Martha judged their first international horse shows in Germany, and for the next decade and a half, they traveled the world to judge in many countries: Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, Italy, Australia, Canada, Mexico, & England. Danly and Martha were active members of University Church of Christ in Las Cruces until 2008, when they joined a group of other like-minded believers to plant a new church, the Las Cruces Church of Christ. Danly loved his church family tremendously, and in later years always carried gum for the little children. Danly's memorial service will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, February 12, at the Las Cruces Church of Christ at 2025 N Valley Drive. Those unable to attend in person may watch streaming on the Las Cruces Church of Christ Facebook page (link: https://www.facebook.com/lascruceschurchofchrist) or YouTube channel (link: https://www.youtube.com/c/LasCrucesChurchofChrist).
