Connie Lynn Gomez

January 8, 1949 — July 14, 2022

On Thursday, July 14th, 2022, Connie Gomez, a devoted and kind mother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away in Las Cruces, NM at the age of 73. Connie was born on January 8, 1949 in Fredericksburg, TX to Enos Kelch and Emmie Jeter. Early in life, Connie moved to Lovington, New Mexico with her family. She was a 1967 graduate of Lovington High. Connie's family grew when her mother Emmie married Harold Jeter, who became Connie's beloved step-father. Connie then attended New Mexico Junior College where she met her future husband and the love of her life, Michael Gomez. She was a candidate for homecoming queen at the Junior College, but we are pretty sure Mike would have asked her to marry him regardless. Connie and Mike moved to Las Cruces where Connie had two children to whom she dedicated her life. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Arts from New Mexico State University. Connie had many talents, from making gorgeous seascape paintings to illustrating a children's book and was even a ham radio operator. But her greatest talent by far was being a kind, welcoming and willing friend. Connie believed in the goodness in people and was always willing to lend a helping hand. She was also always up for a movie (especially a tear-jerker or romantic comedy) or trying something new. She loved to travel, and though it took her some time to pack everything she insisted was necessary (those bags were heavy), she was always ready to go. Wherever she went, she always wanted to make sure that others had what they needed - and her purse was amply packed for the task - like Mary Poppin's bag, she was able to retrieve just about anything from it: band-aids, toothpicks, tweezers, nail clippers, a pen, a mint or gum. She had a heart of gold, the patience of a saint, and endless energy for those she loved. Those Connie loved felt the abundance of her care and felt it was nothing short of the best of fortunes to have her as a friend. Indeed, Connie had many, and without reservation, they all would call her their best friend. "That's just Connie," people are likely to think as they read on, nodding in agreement. It's true, you didn't even have to be a friend to feel the warmth of Connie's giving heart - her clients at New Mexico Works and the students she served at Garcia Hall at New Mexico State University will attest to that. Truly, there was no such thing as a person Connie had met that she did not consider a friend. Connie is survived by her two children, John and LeAnne Gomez, her brother Dennis Kelch and her sister Kathy Black, brother in-law Ardell Black and family, sister in-law Lynda Grimsley and family, niece Myka Kelch and family, and the Jeter family.
