Clarence H. Fielder, 87, went to join his parents, Henry and Gertrude Fielder and meet his Lord on Friday, April 3, 2015 to join with his brothers Alfred, Cleo and his sister Veola Gooden. Clarence was baptized at an early age at Phillips Chapel CME Church, 638 N Tornillo built by his grandfather, Daniel Hibler in 1910. The chapel sits in the oldest part of town. The church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and listed on N.M. State Register of Cultural Properties. Clarence taught in the Las Cruces Public Schools 32 years and at New Mexico State University 100 semesters. Clarence served as a First Lieutenant in the US Army, Korean War. He was honored with the Purple Heart and Silver Star for gallantry in action. He later retired as a Major in the Army Reserve. He was awarded Las Cruces Teacher of the Year (1971) and State of New Mexico Teacher of the Year (1971), Director of Youth Conservation Corp for the Bureau of Land Management. He held office in many organizations: Phi Delta Kappa (NMSU), Dona Ana Chapter of the Aggie Alumni Association, Branigan Memorial Library, Board of Directors, Las Cruces Jaycees, Boys and Girls Club, Board of Director, NM Association of Classroom Teachers (ACT) He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Veteran of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans. Clarence assisted Terry Moody, then an anthropology graduate student at N.M.S.U., who designed and fabricated an exhibit about Las Cruces African American Community (1890 - 2002). The exhibit has been displayed all across New Mexico. He is survived by his sister, Gertrude Boyer (Hobart), Niece, Marcia Boyer, Nephew William H Gooden, II (Mary), Niece, Jovonne Gooden, Nephew, Paul Fielder, Niece, Deanne Butler (Jermaine), Nephew, Brian Fielder and Sister In-law Gladys Fielder (Alfred deceased), cousins Gloria Bulloch and Ollie Jacksons and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
