Catalina Holguin

February 13, 1928 — December 16, 2020

Catalina Lucero Holguin (also known as La Guera, Cata, and Russia) is now in the hands of our loving Lord. Catalina was surrounded by her loving family as she entered eternal life on December 15, 2020 at the age of 92. Catalina was born on February 13, 1928 in Mesilla, NM. She was preceded in death by her parents Don Ernesto G. Lucero and Doa Juliana V. Lucero, her husband Albert Holguin, and her siblings Dora and husband Antoio Fierro, Amina and husband Pablo Rede, Candelaria and husband Choy Ybarra, Luz Lucero, Ernesto "Benny" Lucero, Gilberto Lucero, Reynaldo Lucero, Rudolpho Lucero, sister-in-law Celia (wife of Conrado Lucero), and stepdaughter Norine Anaya. Catalina had many friends including all of the Mesilleros, all who worked with her at Safeway, and all who met her along her journey in life. Mom graduated from the eighth grade and would often reminisce about her school buddies in Mesilla, the plays they performed, and the songs they sang. Mom was one of the many amazing women of Mesilla. Mr. Feather, a professor at NMSU, and his wife had purchased Mom's graduation dress and her beautiful bouquet of flowers. Mother and her older sister Candelaria would travel to California with Mr. and Mrs. Feather to bring exotic plants for his studies. Mom was part of her sister Candelaria's court when she was crowned Queen of Mesilla; they were paraded from Las Cruces to Mesilla. Mom was a volunteer poll worker during the elections at Palacio's with her father, Don Ernesto Lucero, the Constable of Mesilla. At Palacio's, Mom and her brother Benny would take charge of the dance floor with the Jitterbug. Mom had music in her heart and loved to sing, dance and play any instrument she could get her hands on. Mom worked at Safeway for over 30 years, rarely missing a day or being late. Mom was selfless and always quick to help her family. Raised Catholic, she could recite the mass in Latin and knew the Angel de La Guardia prayer that she learned from Leonardo, el Zapatero of Mesilla. Mom is survived by her loving children Celia "Sally" and husband Ray Torres of Fairacres, NM, Robert and wife Carmen Lucero of Las Cruces, NM, Daniel and wife Marty Lucero of Las Cruces, NM, her stepson Albert and wife Patty Holguin of Doa Ana, NM, her siblings Aberlardo and wife Virgia Lucero of Anaheim, CA, Ruben Lucero of Las Cruces, NM, Conrado Lucero of Mesilla, NM, her sister-in-laws Oty Lucero of Bloomington, CA (wife of Benny Lucero), and Esperanza Lucero of Lakewood, CA (wife of Rudolpho Lucero), her grandchildren Michael Torres, Yvonne (John) Holguin, Steven Lucero, Eric Lucero, Lori (Carlos) Hernandez, Shelby (Beau Allen) Lucero, Matthew Lucero, her great-grandchildren Lovaey Torres, Ashley Morales, Gabriel Lucero, Carlos "Dash" Hernandez, Victoria Hernandez, and her great-great-grandchild Aiden Hernandez.
