Barbara Staley Brown, beloved wife, mother, scholar, and friend, passed away on January 28, 2025, at the age of 75. She was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and raised in Alamogordo. Her brother, Edmond Christopher Staley, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Robert Brown of Las Cruces; and her sons, Eric Brown of Philadelphia and Jared Brown of Taos.
Barbara met Bob Brown. the love of her life for fifty-six years, while he was stationed at Holloman AFB, NM. Barbara and Bob began their family in Kansas with the birth of their first son, Eric. They later moved to Bob’s hometown in Boise, Idaho, where their second son, Jared, was born. The family eventually settled in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Barbara was a woman of remarkable intellect and determination. While raising her two sons and being a devoted wife, she passionately pursued her education. She earned two degrees with honors from New Mexico State University, including a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's in Archaeology and Anthropology. This academic foundation led her to establish her own archaeology business, which brought her unique discoveries and exciting adventures. She later shared her knowledge and enthusiasm as an instructor of cultural anthropology at Doña Ana Branch Community College and White Sands Missile Range.
Barbara discovered a passion for genealogy, becoming a skilled researcher who helped countless individuals trace their ancestry back centuries. She found immense joy in connecting people with their past. She also cherished time spent with Bob, spoiling her beloved dogs (who knew the sound of "treat" and would eagerly run to her side), delving into books and PBS mysteries, and indulging in her love of shopping (the daily arrival of catalogs was a highlight).
Barbara possessed a remarkable knack for finding the perfect, thoughtful gifts for her loved ones. She was a devoted mother, always keeping her sons and their happiness close to her heart. Known for her impeccable fashion sense, Barbara always exuded class and beauty. Her home reflected her unique and eclectic taste in art. She generously opened her home to local college students, mentoring them and becoming a second mother figure to some.
After retirement, Barbara and Bob traveled the world together, enjoying cruises and the company of friends. They also delighted in hosting parties and celebrating life's joys. However, Barbara's health began to decline due to the lingering effects of polio, which rendered her immobile. Despite this challenge, Barbara remained upbeat and positive, using her powered wheelchair to move through the house.
Barbara will be remembered for her elegance, generosity, intellect, vibrant personality, unwavering love for her family, and unrelenting optimism, even in the face of adversity. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Barbara's life was a testament to her adve
