Arthur Lara Woods

November 13, 1941 — November 21, 2022

Arthur L. Woods, 81, of Las Cruces, NM, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, Nov. 21, 2022. Tury, as he was known to close family and friends, was born on Nov. 13, 1941 to Jesus Maria Lara and Walter Woods. He was raised in El Paso, TX and graduated from Bowie High School. He often shared memories of his youthful adventures growing up in downtown El Paso.

Following high school, Arthur enlisted with the Army on three different occasions totaling nine years of service: Nov. 1959 - Oct. 1962, Jan. 1963 - Dec. 1965 and Dec. 1967 - Dec. 1970. Arthur's military years included multiple combat tours in the Vietnam War. He received an Honorable Discharge after each enlistment as well as several honor medals and recognition. He remained proud of the sacrifices he made to our Nation. He was an active member of local VFW Post 10124 where he served as Post Chaplin and all-around handyman.

Arthur enjoyed many hobbies and aspired to better himself throughout his life. Amongst his many hobbies were fishing, camping, long walks with his grandchildren and among his favorite, working with wood. His woodwork included wood shelving, furniture restoration, framed wood art and hiking sticks made of yucca. He was a man of many aspirations always seeking education in pursuit of new skills to support his family and improve himself. Following his military service, he worked and retired from White Sands Missile Range as a communications technician. He later sought and obtained his electrician

journeyman's license working for Christian Electric. While married to his one and only wife, Natalia Villa Woods, he was an active parishioner at the Immaculate of Heart of Mary Catholic Parish. He enjoyed spending time reading his Bible while sipping on a cup of coffee.

He was the proud father of five children: Marie Woods Gallegos and husband Joe, Arthur Woods Jr., Michael Woods (deceased), Richard Woods and wife Rosa, and Diane Woods Escandon and husband Mario - as well as 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren with one more on the way. Arthur is preceded in death by his mother, father and brother Eddie Maynez - and is survived by brother Albert Pea and sister Bertha Kingstone.

Arthur will be cremated and buried at the Military National Cemetery located at Fort Bliss, TX. Family, friends and others whose lives Arthur touched are invited to his services at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, 1240 S. Espina St, Las Cruces, NM at 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022.
