Alfonso Lopez "Al" Nunez

March 23, 1930 — June 29, 2023

Alfonso (Al) went home to our Lord on June 29th, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Al was born in San Diego California on March 23, 1930. Al is preceded in death by his parents Cayetano Sr. and Benancia (Lopez), his brother Cayetano Jr., sister Carmen Oliver, Gloria Smith, and brothers Salomon, and Moises.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Marlene M. (Axness). Their grown children Danny (Debra) of Las Cruces, Cindy Zediker (Steve) of Parker, Colorado, James (Margaret) of Las Cruces, and David (Aly) of Roundrock Texas, many nephews and nieces and six grandchildren; Micah, and Jodi Zediker, Casia, Kiana and Caleb Nuez. and Luis Muoz. Al and Marlene cherished every moment they shared with their family.



Al was a man of God. He was a patient, kind and loving person. He greeted almost everyone with a warm smile as he looked you in your eyes. He would also lovingly bid farewell to family and friends as they would drive or walk out of view.



Al was trained in the Army, college and professional development to be a leader.

Al was an original member and the longest active member of the Voz Vaqueros singing group. He had been President of the Voz Vaqueros for 15 Years.



In the early 1950s Al studied Electrical Engineering at New Mexico A&M (NMSU) on the GI Bill. At this time Al was also working as a linesman for the phone company, while still in the reserves. Al worked for Mountain Bell for 35 years as an Engineer/Designer and then a Right of Way Agent using his personal skills and Spanish to negotiate with land owners. Al Retired from Bell Telephone in 1986.

He was an active member of the community and involved in many organizations.

He was New Mexico Jaycee State President (1962), Past council president at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mayfield H.S. Booster club past president, Lions Club, IRWA and served on the Board of Directors for Rescue the Multitudes Juarez children's home. One of Al's proudest moments was as the Chairman for the merge of ELCA and ALC Lutheran Church Synods. Al was on the California Lutheran University Board of Regents for a few years. The Nuez's are charter members of Trinity Lutheran Church (Established in 1967)



We once asked him what happens after we leave this world to which he replied, "I don't know but, I believe I will see all those I love again."

Our family extends a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Zahir and his staff for years of superior healthcare.



A celebration of Al's life is planned for Monday July 10th, 2023 Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. with Service starting at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2900 Elks Drive, Las Cruces, NM 88005. A reception is to follow in the fellowship hall.



A Private Internment at Masonic Cemetery to take place at a later date.
