Alan (Hippy) Basil Cleary Las Cruces, NM - Alan (Hippy) Basil Cleary of Watertown, NY most recently of Las Cruces, NM passed away January 16, 2022, of complications related to colon cancer surgery. Alan is survived by his wife of 52 years Marie (Ada) Cleary, his daughters' Marie Ray of Slidell LA, Nicole Smith of Las Cruces, NM, Lori (Todd) Higginbotham of De Ridder LA; his son Alan Jr (Kim) Cleary of Las Cruces, NM, twelve grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, his sisters Toni Pacifici, Lou Ann Bell, Bridget Cleary, Penni Coker and Bernadette Mcfeeters, his brothers Patrick and Mark Cleary and his beloved dog Chico. Alan was born February 12, 1952, in Watertown, NY to Basil (Red) and Shirley Cleary as the 4th of 10 children. Alan was preceded in death by his father Basil, his mother Shirley and his sisters' Ruth and Mary. Alan served his country in the U.S Navy during Vietnam from 1969-1972. After his discharge from the Navy, he returned home to Watertown, NY where he worked for Champion International and later owned and operated Al's Woodshed until he retired. In retirement Alan and Marie moved to Las Cruces, NM to enjoy the nicer weather and be with their daughter. They were later joined by their son and his family. Alan was a dog lover and enjoyed taking his dog for walks every day. He loved the outdoors and really enjoyed flying RC airplanes and going to the shooting range. He also loved playing guitar and learning music. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and watching old western movies. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donation be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association in Alan name.
