Walter Syzdek passed away on January 29, 2009 in Las Cruces, NM while he was there with his wife Eleanor, visiting their daughters. Walter was born June 12, 1914 in New Boston. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Lewis, who had immigrated to the United States from Poland, and by his siblings, John, Stanley, Josephine and Frank. Walter graduated from Mahanoy Township High School in 1932. He served in the Merchant Marines from 1940 to 1945, having graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut as an Ensign in the Merchant Marine. During World War II, he received the Merchant Marine Combat Bar, and awards for serving in the Pacific War Zone, Atlantic War Zone, and Mediterranean Middle East War Zone. Walter retired from Alcoa Company, Cressona. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eleanor Gulick Syzdek, daughter Christine Sands and son in law Roy Sands of Las Cruces, NM and daughter Karen Syzdek and son in law Lee Vigil of El Paso, TX, and grandsons Jason (Shannon) and Timothy (Iris) and Great grandchildren Keira, Thaden, Jayden, James and Dylan.
