Leola Nelson was born in Paris, Texas on June 4, 1918 to parents, Lewis and Rose Nelson. One of three siblings, Bill and Sarah. Leola worked at New Mexico State University for approximately twenty years as a cook for a sorority. Afterward becoming a chief cook at Neff Restaurant, where she was employed for ten years until her retirement. Mrs. Pettes was also very well known for her cakes, sweet potato pies, and Pecan Pies (a favorite of her late brother, Andrew Trotter). Leola united with Bethel Second Baptist Church in 1942 under the leadership of Rev. I.S. Swisher. She remained loyal to her membership. She served in the Hospitality Committee. She was very adamant regarding her children receiving an education. Out of eleven children, six attended college. Leola and Charley B. Pettes were married in 1935. From this marriage, seven sons, C.B. Pettes, Jr., Harley Pettes, Eugene Pettes, James Pettes, Alfred Pettes, Andrew Pettes, four daughters, Ora Pettes (Jackson), Josie Pettes (Breazell), Debbie Pettes, Diana Pettes, fifty-two or more grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, and a host of great great grandchildren. On Sunday, May 13, 2018, the sun set on the life of Mrs. Leola Nelson Pettes when the Lord called her home to eternal rest. She is preceded in death by her husband, C.B. Pettes, Sr., Parents, son, Michael, daughter, Debbie, and daughter, Josephine "Josie." A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Bethel Second Baptist Church. Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, May 21, 2018 at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery. First Visitation
