Helen Almon

May 28, 1928 — January 5, 2021

"Yes we have confidence and hopeful courage and are pleased rather to be away from home out of the body and be at home with the Lord" II Corinthians 5:8 Amp. On January 5, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend Helen Almon, went home to be with the Lord after a long and well lived life. Known to be a woman of faith in God, strength, graciousness, generosity, beauty, humor and feistiness! As well as quite the fashionista! If ever asked how she was doing, her reply always was "I'm still kicking - with the Grace of the Good Lord. How about yourself?" Leaving one with a smile and admiring that she was full of a spirit of life, fire and vigor. Helen Almon was born in Helena, Arkansas the first of eight children to Ora Lee and Gilbert Robinson. As a young adult she was graced to travel and live in Arkansas, Tennessee, California and Ohio. It was in Toledo, Ohio where she met and married her dearly departed husband Jesse Almon, a Korean War veteran. They settled in Las Cruces, New Mexico with their minor children after leaving Toledo, Ohio in August of 1965 due husband's job transfer. They lived in Lexington, Kentucky for three years, until Jesse returned to Las Cruces to work at NASA, where he retired after 36 years of civil service. Upon arrival in Las Cruces, Helen and Jesse immediately became active members of Bethel Second Baptist Church where Helen was devoted to the Missionary Circle, Bible Study, serving the sick and shut-in as well as providing and exposing her children to the foundations of Christianity through the biblical teachings. She alongside her husband was consistent in instructing both children and grandchildren towards excellence of character and education. As someone who loved people, socializing, sharing and entertaining, Helen established lifelong loving relationships with her neighbors, friends, church family, and co-workers throughout Las Cruces. Helen retired from a career at the City of Las Cruces in 2005. After retiring, she continued to be a life-long learner and worked at the Las Cruces Museum of Nature & Science and Branigan Cultural Center. She continued to be active with a bowling league and involved in church activities. As a member of the Las Cruces NAACP Chapter, she was recognized and awarded for her dedication and service as the organization's Membership Chairman.
