Elisabeth Charlotte Bernhardt

Elisabeth Charlotte Bernhardt, 79, of Schoharie, New York, died on March 22, 2010 at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces, New Mexico, after a brief illness. Elisabeth was born in Hemau, Germany on June 19, 1930. She traveled to the United States by ship in 1956, where she met the love of her life and husband of nearly 52 years, Harold Bernhardt. Together they began raising a family in Long Island, New York and later moved upstate to Schoharie, NY in 1970 where they lovingly raised their 6 children. Elisabeth loved God and loved her family, which included many elderly people who found tender loving care in her home. Ever hospitable, she always had room at her dinner table for one more. Elisabeth cherished the church community of St. Joseph's in Schoharie where she devoted many hours to worshiping, praying, teaching, decorating and serving. In later years, Harold and Elisabeth began traveling to New Mexico during the winter, where they made a home for themselves and their daughters, and enjoyed fellowship at Holy Cross Catholic Church. Elisabeth is survived by her husband, Harold, their four sons, Thomas and wife Jennifer, Kenneth and wife Maureen, Carl and wife Sue, John and wife Wendy, and two daughters, Linda and Lori, and 20 grandchildren, Athena, Daniel, Rebekah, Christopher, Charles, Cassandra, Rachel, Elisabeth, Amanda, Andrew, Jonathan, Emma, Daniel, Matthew, Sarah, Audrey, Gina, Tamera, Ella, and Joseph. We loved her dearly. A memorial service will be held for Elisabeth at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Las Cruces, New Mexico on Saturday, March 28, at 11:30 am.
