Beulah Hunter Oyler passed away quietly on August 24, 2023, at Mesilla Valley Hospice with family present. She was born on July 18, 1926, to Houston and Wynogene Hunger in San Saba, TX. She grew up in Roswell, NM the third of nine children. She graduated from Roswell High School and was an operator for the phone company.
She met the love of her life and lifelong friend, Bob Oyler, at a rodeo in Capitan, NM while he was stationed at Alamogordo Airfield. They were married in 1946 and had six children. Robert, Rebecca, Roger, Rex, Randy and Reggie.
When Bob returned from service they moved to Las Cruces, where he graduated from New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts (NMSU). They then moved to Laramie, Wyoming where my dad studied to be a farrier and their first child was born; but he decided it would be better to return to military service.
Beulah loved to travel and though the military life would give her the opportunity to see the world. However, her growing family moved to Texas, California and then back to Roswell.
Although Beulah said she would never live in Las Cruces again, when bob retired in 1967 that’s exactly where she landed, Beulah didn’t skip a beat and thrived in Las Cruces, for the rest of her life.
Beulah was a fantastic mother! Hers was a bustling home, that was always open and always had room for more around the table. She always provided a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on and a warm hug whenever needed.
She was a Scout leader and taught Red Cross courses. She loved bowling, hiking, camping, and sledding. She also loved playing games including bridge, dominoes, cards and dice. She was active in the PTA, attended every sport event, band, orchestra and symphony concert her children were in. she was a member of the Mesilla Valley Garden Club for 46 years and served many capacities including president.
Beulah and Bob were active in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church-teaching Sunday School, helping in the nursery, leading the youth fellowship, and starting a Bible study group, dubbed Moocher’s anonymous” by her children. The moochers became a group of lifelong friends who gathered weekly to eat and play dominoes. Beulah was the last surviving member of this close-knit group.
The family built a cabin together in Ruidoso. With the help of their extended family, the cabin was completed in a year and a half. Wonderful memories were created both during the building and the many years that followed.
She is preceded in death by her parents Houston and Wynogene, her husband Bob, one brother Houton Jr. and three sisters Thana, Bama and Sarah, her son Dr. Randy Oyler and many family members and friends. She is survived by two sisters Kim and Peggy and two brothers George and Sam, five children Robert (Anne), Becky ( Darvy) Fuller, Roger (Gloria), Rex and Reggie (Annmarie), seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held, Saturday, November 25, 2023, 10:00 am at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 225 West Griggs Avenue.
