Don passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on February 25th 2023 at the age of 72. He was born in Las Vegas, N.M. to Dorothy and Howard Platt whom he preceded in death. He is survived by his spouse Barbara, Stepson Loren, two sons Cyrus (m.Rachel Platt), Howard (m.Amanda Platt) and daughter Sandra (m.Valente Cisneroz). Sister Sandi and brother in law David Leyvas of Williams Arizona. He leaves his legacy to 22 grandchildren and 2 great grandsons.
Anyone that knew Don, knew of his love for his family, especially for his grandkids. He loved the great outdoors, hiking, adventuring off, geology, geography, history, electricity, math, music, alchemy and botany. He was a self proclaimed audiophile. He did amazing things with his hands, from detailed leather and woodwork to building a zip line and swing set out of telephone poles for his children. In his early days he was a lineman for the telephone company and one of the first to install Fiber Optics.
He was a 1969 graduate of Mayfield High School. He received his Civil Engineering Degree in 1997 from New Mexico State University.
He retired from the Public Works Department for the City of Las Cruces in 2014.
He has been serving on the Winterhaven Municipal Water Association Board for 23 years, most recently as the Vice President.
Colleagues, family and friends will miss his presence, guidance and wisdom. Visitation will be Wednesday March 8, at 9:00 am, at Getz Funeral Home, at 1410 E. Bowman Ave. He will then be escorted and laid to rest at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.
