Condolence From: Michelle Steward
Condolence: Christopher, Allison and Jessica, I worked with your father at Wake. From the time I started at Wake (2004), your father was enormously helpful and encouraging.

And one thing was clear.......he loved each of you deeply. I knew each of your names quickly because he regularly talked about you, raved about you, spoke so proudly of each of you.

He valued your differences from one another, appreciated your uniqueness. And was clearly so excited about each of your futures.

Deb, I frequently think about the first time I met you. It was at a Wake School of Business holiday event at Forsyth Country Club. James referred to you as "Debbie". It took me a full 30 minutes of calling you "Debbie" before I realized that was his sweet name for you, but that other of our colleagues called you Deb. I made the joke to you once I realized that was the case that I felt like I had been calling you "honey" or "sweetie" for 30 minutes. We all laughed. It was a simple moment, but spoke so much to me over the years about you and James. The last time I saw you, at breakfast at Midtown back in 2018, you and James sat there in the booth like newlyweds. You are such a special person on so many levels.

James let us know as his colleagues how much you each meant to him.

Here is a piece that the School of Business shared today about James:

My heart is with your family as you move forward.

Condolence: My condolences on James's passing. I truly enjoyed the finance class I took from him while he was at NMSU. He was a good friend to my husband, Mike. May his memory be for blessing.

Condolence: As a newby at Wake Forest, I learned much from James. He and I were often the only biz school faculty at the Teaching and Learning Center book club discussions. He was always thoughtful and provocative. He was also always willing to learn and improve and reflect on himself as a teacher, man, husband and father. I remember struggling at one time because I was juggling teaching, starting a new internship program, and a full research agenda when I was invited to be on a dean search committee. I was wrestling with what to do and James was having a casual conversation with me and another colleague and he asked a couple of simple questions like "What are you doing that is more important than this?" In that conversation, James taught me about priorities and how to analyze the multiple demands and invitations I have begging for my attention at any given time. I think about his questions regularly and I appreciate his way of coaching me. I am forever grateful to have been his colleague.
In closing, I love that James was a man who was very clear about how much he loved his wife and his children. He was so very proud of you. I cannot get the picture out of my head of how proud he was when one of his children walked across the graduation stage! He also loved to talk about his wife and the things they were doing or how they were parenting. I hope you find comfort in knowing how very devoted he was to you!

Condolence: My heartfelt condolences to Jamie’s family. We were students together at Lynn Junior High and LCHS, times that I remember fondly and we shared together in. It’s wonderful to read the finely written words about where his path in life took him, leaving behind a great legacy and loss. Rest peacefully Jamie, from your old friend Favy Melendrez.
