Obituary for Nazario Martinez Jr.

It is with a with a heavy heart that the family of Nazario (Sonny) Martinez Jr announces his passing after a fight with cancer. Sonny passed away at the age of sixty-five on May 8th, 2018. He was born on December 13th, 1952 in Mesilla, New Mexico.

He graduated from Mayfield high in 1972. The following year he married the love of his life Terrie Acosta on June 9th of 1973. Sonny worked as a chef for various establishments in Las Cruces such as the Double Eagle. Early in his life he worked as an ice sculptor catering to events at The Hilton.

Some of Sonnys Favorite pastimes included fishing and hunting. Nothing brought a smile to Sonnys face more than his family coming together to enjoy a meal he prepared. He was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan and often caught saying “how 'bout them Cowboys?”.

He is preceded in death by his parents Natividad and Josephina Rubio. And his brothers Robert Martinez, and Joseph Rubio. Robert Martinez Jr.

He is survived by his wife Terrie Martinez of the family home. His daughters Melissa [Juan] Holguin and Nancy [Adrian] Vigil of Las Cruces, New Mexico. His grandchildren Johnnie [Danielle] Robertson-Hernandez of Springfield, Missouri, Jaime G. Hernandez of Las Cruces, New Mexico, Andrew Vigil and his brother Adrian Vigil Jr. His great grandchildren Declan Robertson and Terrin Robertson of Springfield, Missouri. Also survived by his sisters Sylvia [Danny] Barela of Las Cruces, New Mexico and Betty [Tom] Moore of Englewood, Colorado.

The family of Nazario would like to extend a special thank you to Mesilla Valley Hospice La Posada for their kindness.

A Prayer Vigil will be held at 9:30 am, Friday, May 18, 2018 at St. Genevieve’s Catholic Church with a Memorial Mass to follow at 10:00 am, with Father Camilo Montoya officiating.
