Obituary for Chester Davenport

Chester Davenport
Chester was born to Herbert and Edith in Ballinger, TX on December 15, 1931. He graduated from Clovis High School, working in the oil field prior to his draft into the Army in 1951. He married Shirly Peterson on July 7, 1952 after completion of basic training. He served honorably in the Korean Conflict with the 501st Division. On his return to civilian life he worked for the United Sates Postal Service. He spent 9 months recovering from rheumatic fever in Lovington, NM before moving to Las Cruces in ’55 to attend NMSU. Chet learned to plumb and started a long career with the Bureau of Reclamation and the Elephant Butte Irrigation District. He was the System Manager for both the Elephant Butte and Navajo Irrigation Project. The couple had two children, Debbie and Skip who were raised in the church at First Baptist Church in Las Cruces.
Chester was a man of integrity and lived his life as his convictions dictated. He always strove to be fair and disciplined in his actions. He supported his Church and friends without hesitation, he never knew a stranger and helped many different people with his wide variety of skills learned throughout his lifetime. He lived a rich life through his family; spending countless hours teaching them and becoming a model for love and generosity. Chet had a great sense of humor and brought laughter and lightheartedness to every interaction.
He is preceded in death by his brothers Toby Gene, Don and sister Lanell. He leaves his wife Shirley and children, Debbie and her husband Rich, Skip and his wife Brenda. He has five grandchildren, Natalie married to Greg Barry, Jessica married to Shawn Catron, Garrett married to Katlyn, James, and Samantha. His brother Bill married to Jo is the last surviving brother along with sister-in-law Joy and family: Robert, Sharon, and Linda. His extended relatives include the Peterson, Hewett and Gorman families.
Chester will be interred at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The ceremony will be held at Getz Funeral Home on January 26, 2018 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.
