Obituary for John Jamison

John Jamison
John Harold Jamison: June 29,1948 – May 29, 2018

John Jamison of Radium Springs died May 29, 2018 at La Posada, after a major stroke. At 6’4”, John was a big man of strong passions and opinions, a mercurial temper, a deep and ready laugh, heartfelt tenderness for the smallest critters and plants of this world, and a very loud sneeze.

Big John lived in the Las Cruces area for the last 45+ years. He completed a BS degree in Biology and Math in 1973 at UTEP. He worked at most of the electrical supply houses in both Las Cruces and El Paso, and for Carver Electric. He was well known for his hard work and problem-solving skills. John loved to work hard, help people and see the results of his work.

John was born in Beaumont, TX and grew up alongside the “oil patch” as his dad moved the family with the jobs. After the family settled in Farmington, NM in 1958 John was happy to settle in to normal life. He enjoyed sharing stories of the motorcycles, paper routes and adventures that he, his brothers and their friends delighted in.

In his younger days, John was a serious partier. One can still hear stories from the many friends still in this area of that wild and wooly group. However, John quit drinking about 28 years ago, intent on living a better and healthier life. He loved the outdoors, hiking miles of railroad tracks and power-line roads picking up fallen insulators, and making treks to see many of the ancient sites with petroglyphs in the area. He could show you where to search for arrowheads, manos and matates, and petrified wood.

John was preceded in death by his father Harold (’Ol Dad) Jamison and is survived by his wife of 20 years, Cherry Patrick Jamison of Radium Springs; his mother, Mary Gene Jamison of Abilene, TX; two brothers – Jeff Jamison (Jane) of Abilene, TX and Doug Jamison (Debra) of Odessa, TX; and one sister, Suzanne Jamison of Gila Hot Springs, NM. There are another nine nieces and nephews living from California to Idaho to Iowa and Ohio, Texas and Bolivia.

His family would like to thank Trine and Mike Lane and Jerry and Ramona Boles for their care in getting him to the hospital, and Trine for staying with him until his wife could get there. The staff of the fourth floor of Mountain View Regional Hospital were kind and prompt in their care of John. The staff of La Posada was sweet and respectful in their kindness and attentive care for the 32 hours that he spent with them.

A special thank you to Dr. Stefan Schaefer for his care in visiting John at La Posada, and the many friends who stopped by to wish him well and tell him they loved him. John was sent on his journey with many prayers, much light and many expressions of love. He might have preferred to go silently and by himself, but he deserved the love and good wishes. Thank you all.

There will be a private spreading of ashes at a later date. Donations in his memory can be given to your favorite charity, Mesilla Valley Hospice, Good Samaritan Society – Las Cruces Village, the National Stroke Association, or the American Heart Association.
