Obituary for Judith Floyd

Judith Floyd
Judy Floyd of Las Cruces died peacefully on April 5, 2018 surrounded by family at La Posada – Mesilla Valley Hospice.

Judy is survived by her husband of 54 years, Mike Floyd, children Jonathan (Amy) Floyd of Scottsdale, AZ, Jason (Rachel) Floyd of Las Cruces, sister Betty Egbom of Carlsbad, NM and her beloved grandchildren Jordan, Eden, Uriah, Dylan and Brody.

Judy is preceded in death by her father Earl Boyd, mother Dora Boyd and brother Bobby Boyd.

Born in Texarkana, AR, Judy spent her childhood and youth in Carlsbad, NM. She attended New Mexico State University and graduated with honors receiving a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. After graduation, she served on the Board of Directors of the NMSU Alumni Association and remained a devout Aggie for the remainder of her life.

Judy taught both kindergarten and second grade at Mesilla Elementary for six years. She was beloved as a teacher and had a profound impact on the children she taught. Her background in education contributed to her appointment as the first female regent at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. She was the first female president of the University’s Board of Regents and the first woman in New Mexico to head a major university’s board. She served on the board at New Mexico Tech for ten years. Her influence at New Mexico Tech remains in the improved campus environment and in New Mexico Tech’s national visibility.
In 1983 Judy started her own interior design firm, Habitats, expressing her long held passion for designing interiors and decorating. Over the course of 35 years she worked with hundreds of individual and corporate clients helping to create stylish and beautiful environments. Her successes in business and her community leadership led to her appointment to the Board of Directors of Citizens Bank where she also served for ten years.

Judy spent her lifetime involved in many civic and charitable activities. She was a member of the Junior Women’s Club, President of the Board of Directors at La Casa, a member of Jardin de Los Ninos Board of Directors, a founding board member at Tutti Bambini, and a member of the Friends of the Taylor Family Monument Board of Directors. Judy was devoted to her community and particularly to causes that made life better for children and families.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 21, 2018, 10:30 AM at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum, 4100 Dripping Springs Road, Las Cruces, NM.
