Frederick Farmer Burgess died on Thursday, March 1, 2018 in Las Cruces, NM at the age of 93. He was born on January 23, 1925, in Durant, Oklahoma, to Iverson and Gladys Burgess. He served his country in the Army Air Corps from 1943-1946. He met and married Elizabeth Richards while earning a bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education at New Mexico State University. While teaching at Floyd, New Mexico he earned a master’s Degree in history from Eastern New Mexico State University. He spent 27 years (of 35 in education) in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
He was a Godly man who faithfully attended church. He served as deacon and church choir leader at Mesilla Park Baptist Church. He played the auto harp at First Baptist Church. He had a great love of music and could play many musical instruments.
Fred is survived by his wife, Elizabeth R. Burgess; daughters, Betty Lynn James and Freda Louise Upchurch; grandchildren, Robert James, Rebecka Magness, Jonathan James, Robyn Selvidge, and Damon Upchurch; 13 great-grandchildren and one great -great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his sister, Juanita Quesenberry; his brothers, Billy Burgess, Gayle Burgess, and Harry Burgess, and his granddaughter, April Upchurch.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2:00pm, Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Getz Funeral Home.
